Anthropology Fall

Anth 104 Introduction to Anthropology

In this course, you’ll dive into the study of human beings—our origins, cultures, societies, and behaviors. We’ll explore what makes us human from four key perspectives: biological, cultural, linguistic, and archaeological anthropology. You’ll learn how anthropologists investigate everything from human fossils to modern social issues, gaining insight into diverse cultures, traditions, and ways of life across the globe.

Anth 110 Gender Across Cultures

In this course we’ll look at how societies define and understand gender roles, identities, and expectations, and how these have evolved over time. By the end, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how culture shapes our experiences of gender and how these dynamics influence our everyday lives.

Anth 220 Socio Cultural Anthropology

This course is an introduction to Indigenous and non-Indigenous socio-cultural systems.

Students will examine key cultural institutions such as religion, kinship, politics, law, medicine, gender and their interrelatedness.

Power, globalization and culture change will be considered in relation to all topics of the course.

Anth 280 Anthropology of Death

This course explores one of life’s inevitabilities: death.

Using a cross cultural perspective students will explore a variety of funerary traditions to understand how these rituals help define death, guide the behaviour of those grieving, structure the ongoing relations be-tween the living and their dead, and help us
consider our own cultural attitudes towards death.

Anth 290 Special Topics Anthropology of Animals

What kinds of relationships do we have with animals? The answers might surprise you! Cross culturally in time and space, we interact with other animals in work, in play and at the dinner table. They join humans in battle, and our journeys to the Afterlife. While the relationships vary, there is one constant: these relationships are incredibly important in shaping our experiences of being human. Come and explore anthropology through the lens of animals in this special topics course.
